Creating a transportation network that makes it easy, safe, and comfortable to walk in the Twin Ports area

Walking is an essential part of our transportation system. The goal of this plan is to make it easy, safe and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities to walk to daily destinations.

This Pedestrian Plan will be the community’s long-range vision for the future of all things pedestrian in the Duluth-Superior area, from sidewalks and crosswalks to safety and education programs. With advisory committee and public input, it will:

● Identify the issues and barriers to walking as transportation

● Recommend a range of solutions to improve walkability

●  Create a framework for action to create a transportation network that makes it easy, safe and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities to walk in the Twin Ports area

Note, “walking” in this plan refers to people on foot, including those using assistive devices such as wheelchairs.

Pedestrian Plan Public Survey Now Open!

What is the purpose of this Plan?
This plan will create a framework for action to ensure that walking is a safe, convenient and desirable transportation option for people of all ages and abilities throughout the Twin Ports. With advisory committee and community input, it will:
● Identify the issues and barriers that exist for walking as transportation.
● Recommend a range of solutions including policies, implementation guides and investment strategies to improve the pedestrian environment.

Why is this Plan needed?
● To support jurisdictions in making decisions that will encourage walking.
● To provide a guide that includes best-practice solutions and locally-developed recommendations.
● The MIC plans for all the ways that people and goods are transported around the Twin Ports. Part of our work is making our area a better place for people to walk.

When & How will this Plan be Developed?
A 10-month planning process, from February to November 2020, will include 6 advisory committee meetings, 2 public meetings, and a series of public engagement activities.
